Bariatric surgery program receives accreditation as a comprehensive center
Salisbury, N.C., Sept. 15, 2015 - Patients seeking surgical treatment for severe obesity have a choice for receiving care in the greater Salisbury area at a nationally accredited program that meets the highest standards for patient safety and quality of care.
Novant Health Rowan Medical Center announced its bariatric surgery program has been accredited as a comprehensive center under the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP), a joint program of the American College of Surgeons and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. This designation helps identify where patients can expect to receive safe and effective surgical treatment.
To earn the MBSAQIP designation, the rigorous application process analyzes three areas: the surgeon, the program and the medical facility. The surgeon must demonstrate significant expertise in bariatric surgery. Site surveyors review volumes and outcomes, surgical techniques used and the surgeon's commitment to stay up-to-date on the most current surgical treatments. The surveyors also complete a detailed walk-through of the hospital to verify a commitment to excellence and safety.
"The MBSAQIP accreditation is a huge step for the bariatric surgery program at Rowan Medical Center," said Dari Caldwell, president of Rowan Medical Center. "It provides clear evidence that we deliver advanced care and highest quality care to our bariatric patients."
In the United States, over 15.5 million people suffer from severe obesity, according to the National Institute of Health, and the number continues to grow. The comorbidities associated with obesity range from diabetes and cardiovascular disease to certain types of cancers. Bariatric surgical procedures are among the most common elective surgeries in the United States and have been shown to reduce obesity, improve mortality, and decrease the health risks from chronic diseases.
"Our entire bariatric team is honored to receive this accreditation and to be recognized for consistently delivering high-quality care to our patients," said Dr. Eric Mallico, medical director of Novant Health Bariatric Solutions Rowan. "It recognizes the quality work that our excellent bariatric team does every day to help our patients live healthier lives."
Novant Health Bariatric Solutions Rowan offers a full range of minimally invasive laparoscopic and single-incision surgical weight loss options, including gastric banding, gastric sleeve and gastric bypass and has performed hundreds of surgeries with a history of excellent outcomes.
