Leland, N.C., March 25, 2016 – Dr. Tori Asbury of Novant Health Oceanside Family Medicine in Leland, North Carolina, has been certified by the American Board of Obesity Medicine (ABOM) as an ABOM Diplomate. This certification means she has an expertise in the sub-specialty of obesity medicine and has undergone a rigorous training and examination process.
Through this certification, Asbury is able to treat obesity and understand how genetic, biologic, environmental, social and behavioral factors contribute to the disease. Obesity was officially labeled as a disease by the American Medical Association in 2013. There are about 1,200 ABOM Diplomates in the United States and Canada.
Treating obesity may include therapeutic interventions, including diet, physical activity and behavioral change. Additional resources like nutritionists, exercise physiologists, psychologists and bariatric surgeons may be used.
Asbury graduated from Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed family medicine residency in Newport News, Virginia. Before moving to Leland, Asbury practiced medicine in Tennessee. She is board-certified in family medicine and is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians, the Obesity Society and the Obesity Action Coalition.
