BOLIVIA, N.C. ― On June 4, Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center Foundation received a $311,350 hazard mitigation grant from the Golden LEAF Foundation, a nonprofit organization working to increase economic opportunity in North Carolina’s rural communities. The awarded grant, which will pay for a new water well, is one of 47 projects funded by the Golden LEAF Foundation.
“We are thrilled to receive this grant from the Golden LEAF Foundation,” said Cindy Cheatham, development program manager at Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center Foundation. “Novant Health is committed to providing safe and remarkable care, and that doesn’t stop during hurricanes and flooding. While Novant Health has been prepared for these natural disasters in the past, a new water well will alleviate concerns of water supply in times we need it most.”
The grant will pay for the installation of a backup water well for emergency use at Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center that will ensure the sustainability of medical services in the event of compromised water supply during natural disasters. Following Hurricane Matthew and Hurricane Florence, Brunswick Medical Center filed claims totaling almost $250,000 to the Federal Emergency Management Agency for costs incurred by contracting water tanker trucks to prevent contamination of the hospital’s water systems in the case of flooding. A backup water well will provide most of Brunswick Medical Center’s process water needs independent of the municipal water supply. The new water well also will reduce or eliminate future FEMA claims for tanker trucks. Over the long term, the water well will help lower Brunswick Medical Center utility costs.
The Golden LEAF Disaster Recovery Grant Program is funded through appropriations by the State of North Carolina to the Golden LEAF Foundation to make grants to eligible entities to repair or replace damaged or destroyed infrastructure and equipment as well as for the infrastructure to support hazard mitigation resulting from Hurricanes Matthew, Florence, Michael and Dorian.

Golden LEAF announced funding for 47 projects, and of those, 30 projects totaling more than $7.9 million went to support recovery from Hurricanes Matthew, Florence and Dorian. These projects support repair or replacement of infrastructure or equipment or construction of new infrastructure for hazard mitigation in Beaufort, Brunswick, Carteret, Columbus, Craven, Duplin, Greene, Hyde, Johnston, Moore, Onslow, Pamlico, Pasquotank, Robeson, Tyrrell and Wayne counties. Through its Disaster Recovery Grant Program, the Golden LEAF Foundation makes grants to governmental entities and nonprofits to repair or replace infrastructure and equipment damaged or destroyed by Hurricanes Matthew, Florence, Michael and Dorian. Funding for the grant program comes from the State of North Carolina.
