New hyperbaric center and wound care clinic offers healing alternative

SALISBURY, N.C. – The new Novant Health Wound Care & Hyperbaric Center in Salisbury provides advanced care for patients with wounds that won’t heal through innovative therapy techniques. Since late October, the clinic has specialized in treating chronic, difficult-to-heal wounds, including surgical wounds, pressure ulcers, burns and foot ulcers caused by diabetes or poor circulation.

The clinic uses hyperbaric oxygen therapy, a treatment that promotes healing in wounds that have failed to heal through other measures. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy, also called hyperbaric medicine, exposes the body to pure oxygen using a hyperbaric chamber. A patient is put into a chamber where a high level of oxygen is combined with high air pressure, which delivers a greater amount of oxygen into the bloodstream. This therapy stimulates healing by increasing oxygen delivery to the injured tissue. The increase in oxygen promotes blood vessel formation and preserves damaged tissues.

The center was located inside Novant Health Rowan Medical Center, but has moved to a larger, more convenient outpatient building to accommodate the large chambers needed to provide hyperbaric medicine.

The center has three doctors who specialize in different health areas. Dr. Gerald Cochran, medical director of the center, has a background in plastic surgery with over 20 years of wound care experience. Dr. Abayomi Agbebi’s background specializes in infectious diseases, and Dr. Martin Carignan specializes in vascular surgery. The different specialties in the center address the various wound needs of patients.

Novant Health Wound Care & Hyperbaric Center is located at 401 Mocksville Avenue in Salisbury. To receive more information or to schedule an appointment, call 704-210-5109.
