WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Novant Health will address the pressing health concerns faced by Forsyth County residents during a free public forum Thursday, Nov. 5, from 6 to 8 p.m. The event will be held at Winston-Salem State University in the Anderson Center (Dillard Auditorium).
Forsyth County had a diabetes mortality rate of 23.1 percent in 2010, and diabetes ranked No. 3 only behind cancer and heart disease as leading causes of death in the county. In addition, an increasing number of adults are obese, with 26 percent found to have a body mass index greater than 30. About 40 percent of Forsyth residents surveyed last year said they have high blood pressure issues.
During the event, health experts hope to educate Forsyth County residents about ways to avoid chronic diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity.
The panel will be moderated by Grazell R. Howard, executive coach and strategist, and experts will include:
- Dr. Thomas O’Connell, endocrinologist
- Dr. Sherry M. Ryter-Brown, primary care physician
- Dr. Jerome Williams, cardiologist
- Dr. Ophelia Garmon-Brown, Novant Health senior vice president
- Marlon Hunter, director of Forsyth County Department of Public Health
The forum is part of Novant Health’s multiyear community wellness initiative, Remarkable You. Through this systemwide campaign, Novant Health is working to combat prediabetes, high blood pressure and obesity. The event is open to the public, with free parking and refreshments. Reservations are required by Nov. 2. Call 704-316-1148 or email RemarkableYou@NovantHealth.org.
