WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. ― Novant Health has been recognized by the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) in the “HealthCare’s Most Wired” program for the third year in a row. Novant Health was one of 16 healthcare organizations out of 16,165 to score a nine out of 10 in both ambulatory and acute care. “HealthCare’s Most Wired” recognizes health care systems for the adoption and strategic application of technology to achieve great outcomes. The “Most Wired” program evaluated the use of technology in multiple areas, including clinical quality and safety, interoperability, population health, patient engagement and analytics and data management.
“We are honored to once again be recognized as one of the leading healthcare organizations using technology to provide remarkable and accessible care,” said Angela Yochem, executive vice president and chief digital and technology officer for Novant Health. “Novant Health continues to make strides in technology to support our mission to improve the health of communities, one person at a time. This includes leveraging artificial intelligence-based technologies and predictive analytics so we can move faster and with more precision as we address some of the community’s most serious health concerns.”
This year’s research answers several key questions, including the following:
- How much progress has the industry made with population health management, including the adoption of key technologies, like telehealth?
- How much risk are hospitals taking on as they shift to value-based care?
- How have security programs evolved amid ever-increasing security threats?
"Healthcare organizations across the globe are continually striving to raise the standard of care, pushing themselves and their peers to do better," said Russ Branzell, CHIME president and chief executive officer. "We designed Most Wired to identify and share those leading practices so everyone can benefit. It is an honor to be among those that perform at the highest levels, knowing that the excellence they achieve will impact patients for years to come."
Highlights in the 2019 report include:
- Two-thirds of organizations with a telehealth solution report that less than 10% of patients have used it.
- 90% of organizations offer some virtual services in hospitals and 85% do so in physician offices and patient homes.
- 98% of participating healthcare organizations offer a patient portal, though there is variation in which capabilities are included.
- Currently, at an industry level, only 26% of all revenue comes from value-based payment models.
- The adoption of tools for population health activities has grown to 72%, compared to 68% in 2018.
- Organizations that use both EHR and third-party tools but no manual tools for population health report a stronger impact from their population health technology on patient, clinician, operational and financial outcomes.
- 37% of organizations have a comprehensive security program, which is an increase from the 29% of organizations reported last year.
- 73% of participating organizations report that since 2018 the number of security-related incidents they experience has either stayed the same or increased.
- Half of organizations with a comprehensive security program, and 70% of those with a noncomprehensive security program, don’t have measures in place for medical device security.
