Novant Health named in Forbes’ top employers for diversity

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – For the fourth consecutive year, Novant Health has been named as one of America’s Best Employers for Diversity by Forbes. Novant Health is the highest-ranking health care system in North Carolina included on the list, placing 158th in the nation and 6th in North Carolina. Last year, Novant Health was also named one of Forbes’ Best Employers for Women.

“We are honored to be recognized by Forbes for our relentless commitment to fostering an inclusive workplace for our team members,” said Tanya S. Blackmon, executive vice president and chief diversity, inclusion and equity officer, Novant Health. “Last year, as we were dealing with the pandemic, we remained steadfast in our mission – to improve the health of the communities that we serve, one person at a time.”

As the nation and communities were challenged by social injustices in 2020, Novant Health ensured that its team members had the opportunity to openly discuss their experiences and challenges they faced while listening to the experiences of others through open forums and web chats.

Novant Health continues to cultivate a diverse and inclusive culture by providing:

  • Integration of a diversity, inclusion and equity lens into strategic business imperatives.
  • Ongoing diversity, inclusion and equity education for all Novant Health team members, including physicians.
  • Web chats with the chief diversity, inclusion and equity officer to provide open dialogue among team members about diversity and inclusion-related topics and events that affect the communities in which team members work and live.
  • Business Resource Groups (BRG), which are an important part of the diversity, inclusion and equity strategy. The BRGs are organized around a common identity such as age, race/ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation and gender identity, veteran status, etc.
  • Open forums such as live blogs with the president and chief executive officer on topics related to diversity and inclusion, health equity, COVID 19 and social injustices.

Forbes partnered with a market research company to create the annual ranking of America’s best employers for diversity. The list was compiled by surveying 50,000 Americans working for businesses from all industry sectors with at least 1,000 employees. Respondents were asked to anonymously rate their organizations on age, gender, ethnicity, disability and sexual orientation equality. Respondents belonging to minority groups were then asked to nominate organizations other than their own.

The top 500 list features employers that not only received the most recommendations, but also boast the most diverse boards and executive ranks and the most progressive diversity and inclusion initiatives.
