Novant Health names new primary care sports medicine director

CHARLOTTE, N.C.Novant Health is pleased to welcome Dr. Payton Fennell as the primary care sports medicine director for the greater Charlotte market.

Fennell is board certified in family and sports medicine, and he has more than 13 years of health care leadership experience. Before he joined Novant Health, he served as a U.S. Navy medical officer where he earned the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal for meritorious service while deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He also served as an assistant team physician for the Carolina Hurricanes, and as the team physician for Lenoir-Rhyne University. He previously worked as director of the FryeCare Sports Medicine and Concussion Clinic in Hickory, North Carolina

Fennell received his doctor of osteopathic medicine degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and his Bachelor of Science in biological sciences from North Carolina State University in Raleigh. He also earned his Master of Business Administration from Auburn University.

Over the years, Novant Health has established itself as an industry leader in providing comprehensive and specialized orthopedic and sports medicine care across the southeast. In the greater Charlotte market, a team of more than 35 specialty trained orthopedic and sports medicine advanced practice providers work across 27 clinic locations, a dedicated orthopedic hospital, and a brand-new 13,000 square foot center city orthopedic practice. Patients may also benefit from convenient access to two state-of-the-art sports performance training facilities.

Novant Health serves as the official sports medicine provider for several professional sports teams, including the Charlotte Hornets (NBA), Charlotte Checkers (AHL), Charlotte Independence (USL), Joe Gibbs Racing and Chip Ganassi Racing. On a community level, the sports medicine team provides athletic training coverage for Johnson & Wales University, where Fennell will serve as a team physician. The sports medicine team also provides athletic training coverage for numerous public, private and charter middle and high schools across the greater Charlotte market, and provides additional medical support for annual events like the Charlotte Marathon.

Novant Health takes a whole person approach to providing sports medicine care. Patients may benefit from a wide range of services, including sports performance training, outpatient physical therapy, sports nutrition and an innovative sports psychology program.
