Novant Health ranked a top 5 workplace for women and diverse managers

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C., June 21, 2017 – Novant Health has been named the fourth best organization in the nation and second among U.S. hospital systems in the 2017 Diversity MBA Magazine rankings for “Best Places for Women & Diverse Managers to Work.” Diversity MBA is a national leadership organization integrating diversity and inclusion with talent management. Novant Health was last recognized by Diversity MBA in 2015, when the not-for-profit healthcare system ranked No. 47 overall and seventh among hospital systems.

More than 500 companies registered to participate in this year’s survey. Companies were selected based on scores for representation, board diversity, recruitment, workplace inclusion, retention, succession planning and accountability.

Diversity MBA’s methodology consists of a multitiered process:

  • Registration of participating organizations
  • Completion of a survey
  • Rating of participants with the highest scores
  • Secondary research to determine the top 50

New for the 2017 edition of the rankings, Diversity MBA’s survey showcases organizations that make a strategic effort to implement intentional strategies for women and managers of diverse backgrounds to gain access to leadership positions.

Ranked with Novant Health in the top five was Carolinas HealthCare System, based in Charlotte, which placed first overall nationally. Health insurer Health Care Service was second overall, followed by AT&T (third) and Bank of America (fifth).

“Our team is very proud of this recognition because it shows the way we strive to embrace diversity and inclusion as a core value. We want to be welcoming to all people,” said Novant Health President and CEO Carl S. Armato. “Working toward diversity and inclusion is not only important because it’s the right thing to do, but because we can only be the best organization we can be and fulfill our calling by including the strengths and talents of each team member.”

As part of the health system’s diversity and inclusion efforts, Novant Health invests heavily in its employees’ professional development in a number of ways, including mentoring programs, tuition reimbursement and corporate education class offerings, while also keeping an eye on work-life balance and overall well-being of employees. Novant Health also offers employee benefits and services to meet the changing needs and lifestyle of what is an increasingly diverse workforce. The organization, with over 26,000 employees, has also recently updated its diversity and inclusion training materials and, since 2006, has worked to ensure supplier diversity.

“At Novant Health, we truly value our leadership in diversity and inclusion. We strive to deliver remarkable patient care, attract and retain diverse talent, develop strong community partnerships and have a highly inclusive culture,” said Tanya Blackmon, executive vice president and chief diversity and inclusion officer at Novant Health. “We’re intentional in identifying ways to address the unique needs of people in all our communities, and that includes our team members.”
