Winston-Salem, N.C. — Novant Health has achieved a major milestone in its commitment to extend remarkable care in Western North Carolina, receiving conditional approval from the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services to build its first hospital in the area, subject to the state’s standard appeal process. Novant Health Asheville Medical Center will be a 34-bed, full-service community hospital designed to bring high quality, convenient care to residents in Asheville and beyond.
The approval comes as Novant Health continues to expand access to care across the region, including the recent completion of the first phase of Novant Health South Asheville Medical Park, which will provide convenient access to specialty clinics and procedural space.

Novant Health Asheville Medical Center
Located at 433 Long Shoals Road, on a 24-acre site near the Biltmore Park Town Square shopping mall off Interstate 26, Novant Health Asheville Medical Center is slated to open in 2030.
The hospital will feature:
- A fully equipped emergency department
- Comprehensive imaging, laboratory and pharmacy services
- Spacious patient rooms and support spaces designed for safety, efficiency and comfort
Modeled after Novant Health’s proven community hospital design, the Asheville facility will improve access to care across Buncombe County.
Novant Health South Asheville Medical Park
Novant Health South Asheville Medical Park is the product of years of strategic planning to build healthcare infrastructure that meets the needs of Western North Carolina. A yearlong renovation of the former Gold’s Gym has transformed the site into 38,000 square feet of contemporary clinical and procedural space with ample, accessible parking. Two specialty clinics – Novant Health Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery and Novant Health Women’s Specialty Care – are now based at the medical park located at 1815 Hendersonville Road, Asheville, and are welcoming new and existing patients.
