CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Novant Health is pleased to announce Jason Bernd as president and chief operating officer of Novant Health Matthews Medical Center. In this role, Bernd will lead overall hospital operations and collaborate with Novant Health Institutes and the Novant Health Medical Group to successfully implement strategic initiatives that align with the mission and vision of Novant Health.

Bernd has been with Novant Health since 2006 and has held a variety of positions, most recently serving as president and chief operating officer of Novant Health Charlotte Orthopedic Hospital. Under his leadership, Novant Health opened its new state-of-the-art orthopedic hospital in 2017 and new ambulatory surgery center in 2018.
Additional experience with Novant Health includes leading the orthopedic, heart and vascular, and cancer service lines in Charlotte, as well as serving as vice president of medical group operations. In those roles, he led operations for specialty physician clinics, including orthopedics, psychology, obstetrics and critical care while successfully developing a unified cancer center that integrated Novant Health Medical Group oncologists and strengthened personalized care for patients. As a heart and vascular service line leader, he led the institute through an affiliation with the Cleveland Clinic, achieving national recognition for quality care and growing new programs like the valve clinic and cardio-oncology. Bernd has also served on the Novant Health finance team.
Bernd has a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Virginia and a master’s degree in business administration from the Stanford Graduate School of Business. He has served on various community nonprofit boards, including the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra and Susan G. Komen.
