CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Movement Foundation and Novant Health have partnered to open a comprehensive medical clinic on Freedom Drive as part of an ongoing effort to serve communities excluded from access to healthcare.
The Movement Family Wellness Center powered by Novant Health, opened Dec. 12 as the newest tenant in the Movement Center, a 40,000-square-feet community and nonprofit co-working space at 2225 Freedom Drive, Charlotte, N.C. The Movement Family Wellness Center will have capacity to serve up to 10,000 patients annually with a team of physicians and support staff.
A recent Novant Health needs assessment identified the area along Freedom Drive and surrounding the Movement Center as a community in critical need of expanded access to healthcare. The needs assessment indicates the immediate population would be best served by 11 primary care doctors and seven pediatricians. However, the area currently has only four primary care physicians and no pediatricians.
“Our vision has always been to use the resources God has blessed us with to bring life, light and hope to our communities by investing in and repurposing real estate,” says Movement Foundation and Movement Mortgage founder Casey Crawford. “We are honored to help amplify the work of outstanding partners like Novant Health and their passionate physicians and staff who are committed to loving and caring for people in our communities.”
The Movement Family Wellness Center will provide preventive and primary care in addition to behavioral health services. The clinic will be staffed with a family physician and a pediatrician as well as a clinical social worker who will work alongside doctors to address diet, mental health, addictions and other health concerns.
The wellness center is the final tenant in the Movement Center. It will occupy approximately 6,500 square feet and include six primary care exam rooms, six pediatric exam rooms and a lab.
“Novant Health is thrilled to partner with Movement Foundation,” said Dr. Bill Hammill, chairman and system service line leader for department of pediatrics. “We are impressed with Movement’s approach and commitment to this community and look forward to teaming up with them to bring health care to the families who live and work in this area.”
Movement Foundation investment
The Movement Family Wellness Center marks the next step in Movement Foundation’s effort to facilitate community renewal along Freedom Drive. The foundation, the nonprofit investment arm of Movement Mortgage, intends to act as a catalyst for community renewal by acquiring, renovating and repurposing real estate in partnership with local community organizations and nonprofits that are working to meet the needs of their neighbors.
Movement Foundation has invested more than $16.5 million to date in three projects along Freedom Drive.
- The Movement Center, which opened in 2016, is now home to the Movement Wellness Center powered by Novant Health; The Harvest Center, a ministry addressing situational homelessness; Urban Promise, a youth mentoring program; Center City Church and several other nonprofit tenants.
- Movement School, a tuition-free public charter school, opened in 2017 and serves more than 400 students in kindergarten through 3rd grade. It will expand through middle school in the years ahead.
- Freedom Housing, a 185-unit affordable housing development, will be built on Movement Foundation property adjacent to the school in 2019. This development is made possible through a partnership between Movement Foundation, the Housing Partnership, Marsh Properties, Covenant Presbyterian, and the City of Charlotte.
