Novant Health Accountable Care Organizations recognized for high quality performance

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Novant Health announced today that both of its accountable care organizations (ACO) – Novant Health ACO and New Hanover Regional Medical Center’s ACO, Physician Quality Partners – have been recognized by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) Medicare Shared Savings Program for high quality performance.

Since its 2017 founding, the Novant Health ACO has consistently earned high quality performance marks and delivered exceptional value to beneficiaries thanks to the tireless efforts of physicians, clinic support teams and other system resources committed to the care of its communities. In 2021, Novant Health acquired New Hanover Regional Medical Center’s ACO, Physician Quality Partners, which is a collaborative that includes the legacy NHRMC Physician Group.

Both of Novant Health’s ACOs ranked in the top 5 ACOs in North Carolina for quality, with Physician Quality Partners achieving a quality score of 100% and Novant Health ACO achieving a quality score of 99.61%. These scores far surpassed the threshold to open the door to shared savings. In fact, in 2021 CMS required ACOs to exceed the 30th percentile score for quality to open the door to shared savings – and the 30th percentile score released by CMS was 61.69%.

Further, the Novant Health ACO has achieved shared savings for a second straight year through its participation in CMS’ Medicare Shared Savings Program. In 2021, the Novant Health ACO generated a total savings of over $15 million for CMS, which results in a total payment of $7.4 million to Novant Health.* Additionally, Physician Quality Partners generated nearly $1.7 million in total savings for CMS.

“The success we have achieved in delivering high quality care at lower costs reflects the collective, collaborative culture of team-based care at Novant Health,” said Dr. Pam Oliver, executive vice president, Novant Health, and president, Novant Health Physician Network. “We are grateful for the opportunity to improve the health of our communities – one person at a time.”

*Shared savings payments are subject to sequestration, under the mandatory reductions in federal budgetary resources required by the Budget Control Act of 2011. As such, the sequestration adjustment is 2% of Shared Savings
