Winston-Salem, N.C., May 18, 2016 – This week, Novant Health announced that it is expanding its executive team to better position the organization to meet the needs of its patients and team members. Tanya Blackmon, Denise Mihal and Janet Smith-Hill, all in current leadership roles within Novant Health will join the expanded leadership team.

Armato, president and chief executive officer of Novant Health. “I am pleased to announce that Tanya Blackmon, Denise Mihal and Janet Smith-Hill will be joining our executive team. Our organization will be stronger and positioned for even greater success thanks to their leadership and experience.”
Tanya Blackmon will serve as executive vice president and chief diversity and inclusion officer. Diversity and inclusion is a core value for Novant Health. Tanya will help Novant Health use diversity and inclusion to strengthen key functions of the organization and to achieve business and patient care objectives.
Tanya joined Novant Health in 1992 and has held a variety of leadership roles, including director of clinical improvement and community care services, director of inpatient discharge planning, chief operating officer of Novant Health Charlotte Orthopedic Hospital and president of Novant Health Huntersville Medical Center. Tanya has a Bachelor of Science in social work from North Carolina A&T State University, a Master of Business Administration from Queens University in Charlotte, and a Master of Social Work from the University of South Carolina. Her role of executive vice president and chief diversity and inclusion officer capitalizes on Tanya’s strengths in operations and her systems approach to achieving outcomes, creating a culture in which everyone is valued.
Denise Mihal is now executive vice president and chief nursing and clinical operations officer for Novant Health. With more than 30 years of experience as a nurse and healthcare leader, Denise has a passion for enhancing patient care. Most recently, Denise has led clinical operations for all Novant Health hospitals, working directly with facility nursing officers, surgical services, and trauma and emergency services leaders. She also oversees clinical operations for Novant Health’s central staffing and scheduling office and case management team.
Denise began her career in healthcare as a registered nurse in intensive care. She joined Novant Health in 2000 as the administrator of Presbyterian Orthopedic Hospital in Charlotte. Denise has served in a variety of roles since then, including chief operating officer of our greater Winston-Salem and Eastern markets and for Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center, president of Novant Health Huntersville Medical Center and president of Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center. She has a Bachelor of Science in nursing from William Paterson University in Wayne, New Jersey, and a Master of Business Administration from Rutgers University in New Jersey.
Janet Smith-Hill will serve as executive vice president and chief human resources officer for Novant Health. Janet has 30 years of experience in nursing and human resources leadership. She embodies Novant Health’s values and supports the organization’s strategic imperatives by developing and implementing relevant people strategies and plans consistent with Novant Health’s mission of improving the health of our communities, one person at a time.
Prior to joining Novant Health, Janet held a variety of roles in the clinical environment including staff nurse, nurse consultant, discharge planning coordinator and patient outcomes manager. Janet began her journey at Novant Health in 1997 as nursing standards coordinator and director of accreditation and regulatory review. Later, Janet led employee relations and then served as vice president of human resources. Most recently, she served as senior vice president of human resources where she has provided leadership for talent acquisition and employment, compensation and benefits, employee relations, employee occupational health, the HR service center, learning and development and business HR. Janet received a Bachelor of Science in nursing from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Master of Science in nursing from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
