Novant Health has hired David Duvall as the new senior vice president of marketing and communications. Duvall has more than 25 years of experience in marketing, communications and business development. He replaces Jim Tobalski who recently retired after 13 years of service.
Duvall brings a wealth of knowledge of healthcare strategy and general management to the organization and is charged with continuing the strategic branding initiative underway at Novant Health. As the healthcare industry continues to face unprecedented challenges, Duvall will align the marketing, public relations, and digital functions across the system under the Novant Health brand strategy. He reports to Jesse Cureton, chief consumer officer.
“David brings a fresh vision to Novant Health at a time when the healthcare industry demands bold ideas and new perspectives,” said Cureton.
Responsible for advancing the strategic branding plan announced in February, 2013, Duvall will unite the system’s commitment to reinvent the healthcare experience across a four-state footprint through strategic marketing and communications. By joining together under one brand, the organization creates a seamless healthcare experience for patients.
“Novant Health is an integrated network of physician clinics, outpatient centers and hospitals, and the strategy to brand our system under one name is the next step in our transformational journey to make healthcare remarkable,” said Carl Armato, president and CEO of Novant Health. “David is charged with aligning the marketing efforts with the brand strategy, while ensuring consumers engage in the seamless experience offered throughout our system. His past experiences, proven success and thought-leadership will help us continue to build a strong brand as we reinvent the healthcare experience.”
Duvall has served in executive leadership roles at WPP/CommonHealth and Publicis Healthcare Communications Group/Discovery, two of the world’s largest communications groups. He has been instrumental in the development and execution of innovative product branding in numerous therapeutic areas relevant to Novant Health including cardiology, neurology, oncology, endocrinology, pediatrics, orthopedics, infectious disease and women’s health.
Most recently, Duvall co-founded Clarus Health, a healthcare strategy, communications and consulting agency. Under his leadership, the company grew from a single consulting contract to a dynamic agency advising and supporting clients such as AstraZeneca, Bristol-Myers Squibb, and Abbott Laboratories, among others. Duvall led marketing and communications engagements including business development, positioning, branding, strategic planning, pricing and customer relationship activities to build brand awareness and grow market share.
Duvall has experience with both national and regional media. He led the development, submission and publication of more than 200 peer-reviewed, scientific publications in medical journals. Additionally, he has implemented numerous advisory boards and hundreds of continuing medical education (CME) programs to reach thousands of healthcare professionals through a variety of channels with documented success. He secured the largest CME grant in company history while at Publicis, to form the National Pain Education Council, a national education initiative for providers, patients, and caregivers.
Duvall received a bachelor of business administration, marketing and operations management from University of Toledo, a master of public health from University of Illinois at Chicago and a master of business administration from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. He and his wife, Karen, relocated to Charlotte from Austin, Texas.
