Novant Health announces president of Haymarket Medical Center

Novant Health has named Donald Sedgley as the new president of Novant Health Haymarket Medical Center. Sedgley has more than 23 years of experience in healthcare operations, systems measurement, clinical improvement and program management.

Responsible for providing overall strategic direction, leadership and operational oversight of Novant Health’s 15th medical center, Sedgley will oversee the 60-bed, $100 million, four-story facility that will employ a staff of 200-300. On schedule to open to the community in early 2014 Novant Health’s first prototypical hospital design is patient and caregiver driven, an innovative approach that returns the nurse to direct patient care, with lean thinking applied to eliminate waste and improve efficiency.

Novant Health Haymarket Medical Center will feature all-private patient rooms, including an emergency department with 20 rooms, a helipad, imaging, a critical care unit with eight beds, a medical/surgical unit with 36 rooms, women’s health with 16 rooms and maternity care with seven labor and delivery suites and dedicated C-section operating rooms, a well-baby nursery with 16 bassinets, four operating suites and a separate procedure room, a café, gift shop and an interfaith room of reflection. Patients and visitors will be welcomed to the facility by a courtyard with expansive green space to promote healing and serenity.

Most recently, Sedgley served as director of operations at Novant Health Rowan Medical Center, a 268-bed hospital located in Salisbury, North Carolina where he oversaw support services, which included inpatient and outpatient facilities. He led facility growth and development, including construction projects and served as the strategic submarket leader for several service lines. Prior to that Sedgley held various operational and clinical improvement positions since joining Novant Health in 2006.

“Novant Health is striving to make the healthcare experience remarkable. One way we’re doing that is making it convenient by bringing healthcare to the communities we serve,” said Melissa Robson, senior vice president of Novant Health and COO of the greater northern Virginia market. “Don is charged with supporting employee, patient and community needs to ultimately deliver a remarkable patient experience. His past experiences, proven success and leadership will help us in our journey to transform healthcare.”

Sedgley earned a bachelor of psychology from Hofstra University, a master of community and organizational psychology from Lamar University and a master of healthcare policy and management from Stony Brook University. He, his wife and three children are relocating from Mooresville, North Carolina.
