Novant Health Awarded $100,000 Grant from Avon Walk for Breast Cancer

Charlotte, NC, November 7, 2014 – Novant Health Cancer Care is pleased to be the recipient of a grant in the amount of $100,000 from the proceeds of the 12th annual Avon Walk for Breast Cancer recently held in Charlotte. The Charlotte walk was the last of eight 2014 Avon Walks held across the country.

With the support of the Avon Foundation, Novant Health Cancer Care will be able to enhance its many community outreach and educational services. Specifically, the grant will be used toward providing breast cancer educational sessions, mammogram screenings and diagnostic procedures to the underserved and underinsured women in the greater Charlotte region. A portion of the grant will also be used to ensure that patients adhere to and complete their breast cancer treatment, which increases their chances of survival.

“We are very thankful for Avon’s financial support,” said Maria K. Long, manager of the Prevention and Early Detection program at Novant Health Cancer Care. “With this funding we are able to provide a large number of women in this community with necessary screenings and diagnostic mammography services.”

Over 700 individuals representing 41 states and Washington, D.C. participated in the 39.3-mile walk that took place in Charlotte Oct. 25-26. Additionally, 102 breast cancer survivors and 101 men joined together to raise $1.4 million in lifesaving funds for breast cancer research and education.
