CHARLOTTE, N.C. ― Novant Health awarded 20 remarkable men and women the Novant Health Upward Mobility RN Scholarship, which supports team members who aspire to be registered nurses (RNs) and are experiencing financial hardship. Recipients of the scholarship are located in both Winston-Salem and Charlotte.
“At Novant Health, we understand the health of our communities can be compromised as a result of inequity in opportunities, including access to education, jobs and quality health care,” said Janet Smith-Hill, executive vice president and chief human resources officer, Novant Health. “Our business is the care of all people, and that starts within our own organization with our team members. It was important for us to help our own team members overcome traditional barriers and support their professional growth and career goals. This investment also creates a talent pipeline for our business – a true win-win proposition.”
Through the Upward Mobility RN Scholarship program, Novant Health team members received up to two years of up-front coverage of tuition and fees for the accredited nursing program leading to licensure as a registered nurse; flexibility of working a reduced schedule without a reduction in current compensation and benefits to increase available time to meet academic requirements; and access to mentorship and career coaching.
“As a mom of two young children and as a wife, it’s extremely difficult to go to school full time, work part time and juggle everything altogether,” said recipient Beatrice Plowman, a certified nursing assistant on the surgical wing at Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center. “This scholarship will help me not worry about tuition and work, but will truly help me focus on school work. I look forward to graduating in December.”
