Charlotte, NC – April 30, 2014 - CureSearch for Children’s Cancer is proud to announce the award of a $20,000 grant to Novant Health Blume Pediatric Hematology & Oncology in support of staff efforts toward discovering new approaches for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of pediatric tumors at Novant Health Hemby Children’s Hospital and Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center. CureSearch and Novant Health Blume Pediatric Hematology & Oncology strongly believe that clinical trials are essential to helping children with cancer today. In 2013, CureSearch supported 78 hospitals and clinics, including Novant Health Blume Pediatric Hematology & Oncology, through their Clinical Trial Advancement Awards Program.
Clinical research offers greater promise for survival and represents the point at which scientific advances reach people, saving lives and changing the odds for kids now and far into the future.
“Cancer – particularly pediatric cancer – is a family disease,” said Paulette Bryant, MD, Novant Health Blume Pediatric Hematology & Oncology. “To be able to offer patients and families the latest in cancer care while remaining close to home makes what is already a difficult journey a little bit easier. That’s what this grant will further enable us to do.”
Among adults, less than five percent of those with cancer are enrolled in clinical trials. Yet for children, more than 60 percent of those with cancer participate in some form of clinical trial. Because clinical trials can save children’s lives today, CureSearch supports local hospitals and clinics, like Novant Health Blume Pediatric Hematology & Oncology, through Clinical Trial Advancement Awards.
Novant Health Blume Pediatric Hematology & Oncology also supports CureSearch through the Foothills Ultimate Hike on June 28 and the Charlotte CureSearch Walk on November 8 at Freedom Park.
