Charlotte, NC, April 17, 2015 – Novant Health, a not-for-profit healthcare system serving the Carolinas, Virginia and Georgia, added one new voting board of trustee member in 2015 – Robert M. Barr, MD, FACR, of Mecklenburg Radiology Associates.
The board also added Joseph H. Ely, a retired executive of Aon Hewitt, and William K. Poston, MD, chief of staff and medical director of laboratory at Novant Health Matthews Medical Center, as new ex-officio, non-voting members. Terms began January 1, 2015.
Barr is currently the president of Mecklenburg Radiology Associates, a group of 45 radiologists and 12 physician assistants. He is a neuroradiologist and has practiced in Charlotte, North Carolina since 1995. He is a graduate of Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts and the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine. Following an internship at Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego, California, he returned to UCSF for a radiology residency and a neuroradiology fellowship. Barr serves on multiple hospital committees, including the Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center executive steering committee. Barr has been a strong advocate for clinical neuroradiology and has been actively involved in issues regarding coding, reimbursement and coverage policy through the American Society of Neuroradiology (ASNR) Health Policy Committee, which he currently chairs. He previously served as the ASNR advisor to the American Medical Association’s AMA/Specialty Society Relative Value Scale Update Committee, where he helped determine the value for a wide range of neuroradiology procedures. He is also a member of the Economics Commission of the American College of Radiology and is a member of the board of trustees of the Harvey L. Neiman Health Policy Institute.
Ely retired as executive vice president and Southeast region manager from Aon Hewitt, a global leader in human resource solutions. He is a 1968 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and received a Juris Doctor degree from Seton Hall University School of Law in Newark, New Jersey, in 1971. Ely lives in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He is chairman of the Triad Region Board of Trustees of Novant Health, secretary of the board of governors of the Presbyterian Homes of North Carolina, a multisite, continuing-care retirement community, a member of the board of trustees of UNC TV and a member of the board of directors of Samaritan Ministries, a homeless shelter and soup kitchen serving Winston-Salem. He also tutors elementary-age school children at El Buen Pastor, a ministry supporting Hispanic families, and is an elder on the session of First Presbyterian Church in Winston-Salem.
Poston currently serves as the chief of staff and the medical director of laboratory at Novant Health Matthews Medical Center. He has served as a pathologist at Novant Health for the past 25 years. He attended medical school at West Virginia University in Morgantown, West Virginia. Poston completed his residency in anatomic and clinical pathology at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas and his fellowship in hematopathology from Bethesda Naval Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland. Prior to his service at Presbyterian Medical Center, he served as the chief of the department of pathology at the United States Army Hospital in Heidelberg, Germany, and as a staff pathologist at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Poston is board-certified in anatomical and clinical pathology, as well as hematology with special qualifications. Poston is the chairman of the Southern Piedmont Region Board of Trustees of Novant Health. He currently serves on the College of American Pathologists Governmental Affairs Committee and has served on the board of directors for the Mecklenburg chapter of the American Cancer Society, and has served as past president of the North Carolina Society of Pathologists and the Mecklenburg County Medical Society.
