Novant Health Board of Trustees Member Named to 2022 Modern Healthcare’s Excellence in Governance Class

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.  – G. Patrick Phillips, a member of the Novant Health board of trustees, is among the 2022 class named for Modern Healthcare’s Excellence in Governance award, a program that recognizes healthcare organization board members who help foster advancement in culture, mission and performance.

“Pat has proven to be an outstanding leader of Novant Health’s board of trustees. During his two-year tenure as board chair and overall six years as a director on the board, he has guided the leadership of the board through great periods of growth, innovation and most recently, a global pandemic,” said Carl S. Armato, president and CEO, Novant Health. “Since joining Novant Health’s board of trustees in 2014, Pat has been instrumental in fostering and guiding the system’s long-term strategy, growth, profitability and innovation. It has been an honor to work with Pat as our immediate past board chair, and I look forward to continue working with him to bring Novant Health’s mission, vision and values to life.”

During Phillips’ tenure as a Novant Health board of trustees member, he has been influential in guiding Novant Health’s stable enterprise and building its strong profile. He has also advanced Novant Health’s culture, integrity and reputation by prioritizing investments and strategic initiatives to strengthen Novant Health’s commitment to health equity and team member satisfaction. Under Phillips’ leadership, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services awarded Novant Health the nationwide Health Equity Award in 2018. In 2019, the Novant Health board of trustees was recognized by the National Association of Corporate Directors for its prioritization of diversity, inclusion and equity. In 2021, Novant Health was ranked first in the nation in Diversity MBA Magazine’s rankings for “Best Places for Women & Diverse Managers to Work.” As part of its COVID-19 response for team members, Novant Health launched Thriving Together, an initiative that provides resources that support team members’ collective, holistic well-being to help them flourish in the face of challenges and in times of crisis.

Phillips, of Charlotte, North Carolina, is a retired 35-year veteran of Bank of America where he held various roles, leading consumer, commercial, wealth management and technology businesses through expansion, while growing the company’s talent and providing collaborative industry leadership. Phillips holds a bachelor's degree in economics from Presbyterian College in Clinton, South Carolina, and a Master of Business Administration from Darden School of Business, University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia. He currently serves as director of USAA Federal Savings Bank Board.
