Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center Foundation announces appointments to its board

BOLIVIA, N.C. – Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center Foundation is pleased to announce the addition of two area residents to serve on the foundation board, which provides stewardship and oversight of its operations and activities. The new members are Cherri Cheek and Lisa Varnam.

Cheek is replacing Brunswick County commissioner Randy Thompson, who completed his term with the board. Cheek is a realtor and member of The Cheek Team with Keller Williams Realty in Ocean Isle Beach. She graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and moved to Brunswick County 32 years ago. Cheek was elected to the Sunset Beach Town Council, served four years. She was then elected to mayor and served five terms in that capacity. Locally, she has served the community on various boards, including the Brunswick County Chamber of Commerce, Columbia Brunswick Hospital, Museum of Coastal Carolina, local school advisory councils and UNCW Board of Visitors. State board appointments include the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching, North Carolina Insurance Underwriting Association, Blue Ribbon Transportation Finance Committee and Seventh Congressional District Educational Advisory Committee, and she was recently asked to serve as a member of the Coastal Task Force with the Department of Insurance. Cheek resides in Ocean Isle Beach.

Lisa Varnam also joins the Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center Foundation board of directors. Varnam is the owner of The Southern Charm Company located in Shallotte, North Carolina. She is a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church. Varnam attended West Brunswick High School and is a native of Brunswick County. Varnam currently resides in Supply, North Carolina.

The Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center Foundation and the board’s purpose are to drive awareness and funding for Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center to benefit both patients and team members. The top fundraising initiative is the emergency room expansion capital campaign to create a separate eight-bed wing for behavioral health patients, which will reduce wait times and help keep patients safe. Other priority fundraising initiatives include the prescription assistance program and breast health program.
