Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center team members recognized by patients

BOLIVIA, N.C. – Each month at Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center, patients have the opportunity to nominate and recognize members of their care team for going above the call of duty when serving patients and their families.

“Our team members are here to take care of patients in their time of greatest need,” said Jill Ward, chief nursing officer, Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center. “I am proud of these individuals who go above and beyond the call to make sure their patients feel cared about while being cared for.”

In July, Kristine Grogan, a registered nurse on the medical-surgical unit, was awarded the DAISY Award after being nominated by the family of a patient who felt that “without her skill, quick thinking and compassion, their loved one would have lost his life.” Her knowledge, professionalism and quick action allowed nurses to care for a patient experiencing trauma. Grogan was nominated by two different families in the same month.

The DAISY Award is a nationwide program for extraordinary nurses to recognize the incredible work they do every day. The DAISY Foundation created the awards program to honor nurses’ exceptional compassionate care. The DAISY Foundation is dedicated to funding research to help fight Diseases Attacking the Immune System. It was established in 2000 in memory of Patrick Barnes, who died from complications of an autoimmune disease called idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. He was 33. Overwhelmed by the compassionate care demonstrated by nurses during Patrick’s illness, Barnes family members made it their mission to recognize nurses around the country.

Kara Kennedy, pharmacy technician, was awarded the BEE Award after being nominated by her manager and fellow colleagues for being a “remarkable technician who does outstanding work.”

The BEE Award, which stands for Beyond Exceptional Expectations, is a similar recognition for CNAs, medical unit receptionists, patient access, office staff, public safety, engineering and more.
