Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center Auxiliary celebrates 50th anniversary

Auxiliary is donating $50,000 to special art project

Winston-Salem, NC, Oct. 31, 2014 – The Novant Heath Forsyth Medical Center Auxiliary is celebrating its 50th anniversary this October. The program has contributed over three million volunteer hours and over $4 million in gifts since its inception in 1964. There are currently two charter members who are still volunteers.

The Auxiliary is financially responsible for the three gift shops at Forsyth Medical Center, newborn photography and employee fundraisers. Most funds raised by the auxiliary are returned to Forsyth Medical Center through special projects.

“Volunteers spend countless hours making sure patients feel comfortable and we cannot thank them enough for their contributions,” said Denise Mihal, president of Forsyth Medical Center. “Over the years, the volunteers at Forsyth Medical Center have gone above and beyond in helping our facility be the best it can be.”

In honor if its 50th anniversary, the Auxiliary is donating $50,000 to “Healing in the Arts,” specifically for a project in the courtyard between the north and west tower. The art will be contributed by a local artist and the project is still in the planning stages.

“The Auxiliary has a long history of participating in art projects with the hospital, so it fits very well with what they have seen as part of their mission,” said Susan Parks, manager of volunteer services, Forsyth Medical Center.

The Auxiliary also funds $20,000 in scholarships each year for health care students at Forsyth Technical Community College.

“The list of projects funded by the Auxiliary over the years has ranged anywhere from $50 to $1 million,” said Parks. “The funds have even helped fund conference centers and the Derrick L. Davis Cancer Center.”

Members of the Auxiliary have been volunteering their time to serve at Forsyth Medical Center in many different ways. In over 50 areas of Forsyth Medical Center, volunteers serve their time by:

  • Visiting patients to offer emotional support and ask about non-medical needs
  • Serving at reception desks and information centers
  • Giving patients and visitors directions and helping them find their way
  • Transporting patients throughout the hospital
  • Assisting in the hospital gift shop and making welcome deliveries to patient rooms
