Novant Health Foundation announces first endowed chair at Novant Health Cancer Institute

Recognizing exceptional physicians with expanded opportunities for research, education and patient care

Endowed chair made possible by a gift from Agnes B. and Edward I. Weisiger Sr.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Novant Health Foundation, whose philanthropic efforts inspire giving to Novant Health programs and initiatives, announces the establishment of the Agnes B. and Edward I. Weisiger Endowed Chair to recognize and support the leading-edge work of next-level physicians at the Novant Health Cancer Institute. The support of this endowed chair at the institute enables us to spearhead a medical research team focused on providing customized cancer care. Dr. David Rizzieri, system physician executive for the Novant Health Cancer Institute, has been named the inaugural endowed chair.

“We are grateful for the vision of Agnes and Ed Weisiger as they demonstrate once again their commitment to remarkable health care,” said Ann Caulkins, senior vice president of Novant Health and president of Novant Health Foundation. “Their generous, forward-thinking funding of an endowed chair makes possible innovative research by a world-class medical team that will bring new treatments to all cancer patients in our community and beyond."

Rizzieri joined Novant Health in 2021 from Duke University where he served as clinical vice chief of the hematologic malignancies and cellular therapy division.

“I’m honored to be named the inaugural chair for the Novant Health Cancer Institute, and for what this gift means to our community in providing remarkable experiences for our patients,” said Rizzieri. “Together, we’re setting the foundation of what I see as the future of optimal cancer care; where highly specialized providers work together as multidisciplinary teams in clinics close to where our patients live, with access to new therapies as a result of ongoing novel clinical research.”

The Weisiger family has a long philanthropic history with Novant Health including lead gifts toward the development of the Novant Health Agnes B. and Edward I. Weisiger Cancer Institute and the Novant Health Agnes Binder Weisiger Breast Health Center.

“The Novant Health Cancer Institute will be able to provide the best treatments of today while doing research to discover the best treatments for tomorrow,” said Agnes Weisiger. “That's a remarkable capability to have right here in Charlotte. Our family is happy to help bring top-notch doctors to our community.”

“Philanthropy plays such a crucial role in health care,” said Caulkins. “It’s a wonderful vehicle for those who want to make life-changing impacts for patients and health care providers. Endowments, in particular, create ongoing, tangible investments to improve the health of our communities. As a foundation, we work closely with all our philanthropic partners to help realize their goals through our mission of providing remarkable experiences for our patients.”
