Charlotte, NC, March 5, 2014 – Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center recently launched state-of-the-art, self-service kiosks that decrease patient registration wait times, reduce paperwork and increase patient privacy. Patients can use these kiosks to check in for pre-registered appointments at the push of a button, making their healthcare experiences simpler and more convenient.
The kiosks are linked to Novant Health’s electronic health record, Dimensions. When patients sign consent forms, scan insurance cards or make a payment, that information is stored in the electronic health record.
Checking-in at the kiosk is similar to using an ATM or automated check-in at the airport. The easy-to-use kiosks allow patients to perform a variety of tasks including:
- Update demographic information and review insurance data.
- Scan identification and insurance cards.
- Sign consent forms using an electronic signature.
- Make a payment by credit card on current and previous account balances.
- Print hard copies of consent forms and payment receipts.
When patients arrive to check in, the kiosk’s touch screen will walk them through the process in English or in Spanish. Patients will have the option to check in using their first and last name or the biometric iris-scanning camera if they have previously enrolled. The iris-scanning camera takes a picture of your eye’s iris, a unique identifier, to match you to your electronic health record.
From there, patients will be prompted to complete the check-in process based on the type of appointment they have scheduled.
“Novant Health consistently seeks innovative ways to make healthcare easier for patients,” says Tate Batson, assistant director of onsite patient access at Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center. “Using the kiosks simplifies the check-in process and creates a great first impression for patients.”
To date, more than 500 patients have completed check-in using the kiosks.
Six kiosks have been installed at key patient access points including the admitting area in the main lobby, outpatient infusion and other outpatient facilities such as the diabetes center and the rehabilitation center.
The kiosks will be convenient for patients to use, but Novant Health staff will be available to answer questions or check in patients through admitting.
Other Novant Health medical centers will launch the kiosks in conjunction with their electronic health record go-live.
