Four Novant Health hospitals earn prestigious Magnet® designation

Novant Health is celebrating a major achievement in nursing care that demonstrates the quality and compassionate care that patients have come to expect. Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center, Novant Health Matthews Medical Center, Novant Health Huntersville Medical Center and Novant Health Charlotte Orthopedic Hospital have achieved Magnet® recognition from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). The Magnet Recognition Program® serves as the national gold standard requiring excellence in three key areas: nursing satisfaction, patient satisfaction and clinical performance.

As the nation’s most prestigious distinction for nursing excellence, Magnet status is the gold standard for patient care. Of the nearly 6,000 healthcare organizations nationwide, only 6.9 percent claim this honor.

“We are extremely proud of our nursing staff and their dedication to caring for patients throughout the Charlotte region,” said Harry Smith, president of Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center, greater Charlotte market. “Earning Magnet status underscores our continued commitment to provide our patients with the highest quality care by a team of professional and caring nurses.”

This is the second Magnet designation for the Novant Health Charlotte hospitals, which lasts for four years. Hospitals that earn Magnet status tend to attract and retain the most qualified nurses, have lower rates of nursing staff turnover, lower rates of patient falls, and greater availability of help for patients; all of which contribute to better patient safety. Nationally, 401 healthcare organizations have earned Magnet status.

To earn Magnet status, ANCC appraisers evaluated documentation around nurse-to-patient ratios and reviewed patient satisfaction survey results. They also analyzed evidenced-based practice initiatives that were led by nurses, intended to improve the hospital environment. In January, each hospital underwent a rigorous review that included an on-site visit. The goals of the Magnet Recognition Program are to promote quality in a setting that supports professional practice, to identify excellence in the delivery of nursing services to patients, and to encourage “best practices” in nursing services.
