Novant Health names new chief medical officer

Winston-Salem, NC – April 29, 2014 – Tom Zweng, MD, has assumed the role of chief medical officer for Novant Health following Stephen Wallenhaupt who remains with the organization in a part-time capacity.

Dr. Zweng previously served as senior vice president of medical affairs for Novant Health’s Greater Charlotte market for the past seven years. A board certified general surgeon, he graduated from the University of California at Davis, completed medical school training at UCLA and a general surgery residency at University of Michigan. From 1990-1995, he was assistant professor of surgery at University of Kentucky Medical School where he developed the laparoscopic program for general surgery, before moving to Charlotte where he practiced as a surgeon with Surgical Specialists of Charlotte for 11 years. He has also served as chief of General Surgery for Presbyterian Medical Center.

Dr. Zweng replaces Stephen Wallenhaupt, MD, who has moved to a part-time role after seven years as Novant Health’s chief medical officer. He has been affiliated with the not-for-profit health system for more than 20 years. From 2001-2006, Wallenhaupt served as the executive vice president for medical affairs of Presbyterian Healthcare in the Charlotte area. He is a board certified cardiothoracic surgeon and formerly a partner of Hawthorne Cardiovascular Surgeons in Charlotte from 1993-2001. Dr. Wallenhaupt remains an executive sponsor for the electronic health record implementation and will focus his efforts exclusively on the electronic medical record rollout across the system.

Dr. Zweng is, a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of several medical societies including the Southeast Surgical Congress, the Southern Society of Clinical Surgeons, and ,the Coller Surgical Society. He is active in his community as well, serving on the boards of the Community Building Initiative, the Mecklenburg County EMS agency, Mecklenburg County Medical Society and in the past, Opera Carolina.
