Charlotte, NC – October 2, 2014 – Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center was presented a check for $25,000 from All-In to Fight Cancer, a local non-profit dedicated to increasing awareness and raising money for cancer support through annual Texas Hold ‘Em tournaments. Each year, All-In to Fight Cancer plays to benefit three local organizations, and this year, Novant Health Cancer Care’s nurse navigator program is a recipient.
Cancer nurse navigators are registered nurses who guide patients and their families through the complexities of cancer diagnosis and treatment, working with physicians and other healthcare professionals to connect the dots while providing support and care. Navigators can explain a diagnosis and treatment options, answer questions through treatment, as well as connect patients with community resources and their physician. This service is free of charge and Novant Health’s goal is for every new cancer patient to be connected with a cancer nurse navigator. In 2012 alone, Novant Health Cancer Centers in Charlotte, Huntersville and Matthews had 2,643 new diagnoses. The funds from All-In to Fight Cancer will help ensure new patients like these are connected with a cancer nurse navigator.
“We really appreciate this donation because want want to see this program continue,” said Belinda Roper, breast cancer nurse navigator at Presbyterian Medical Center. “When a cancer patient first comes in here, it’s a scary situation. They walk in and get the news, and suddenly they’ve lost all control of their life. We’re here to help regain that control.”
To date, All-In to Fight Cancer has raised over $350,000 to support the fight against cancer. The tournaments have taken place annually since 2011.
