WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Novant Health was recently named a 2018 Top Performer by Vizient in Sourcing and Resource Management in the Supply Chain Excellence Award category. Vizient is the largest member-driven health care performance improvement company in the country. Novant Health was one of 10 Vizient member hospitals chosen for its innovative initiative that improved supply chain performance in the last 12 to 18 months.
Novant Health’s submission highlighted a collaboration between its supply chain and pharmacy teams. In 2017, Novant Health reinvented its pharmaceutical supply chain strategy by dedicating strategic sourcing full-time resources from the supply chain department to the pharmacy department.
“At Novant Health, teamwork is one of our core values,” said Tom Zweng, MD, executive vice president and chief medical officer. “In the spirit of teamwork and with the goal of developing a collaborative culture, our pharmacy and supply chain teams came together to develop best practices and ultimately produce great results for our team members and our patients. It’s an honor to be recognized by Vizient for our efforts.”
This integration led to a year-over-year increase of $1.9 million in savings.
“By integrating members of the supply chain into the pharmacy team, we were able to collaborate on contractual decisions while bringing clinical and business expertise into the decision-making process,” said Joe Maki, PharmD, senior director of pharmacy business operations, Novant Health. “Ultimately, this innovative structure increased alignment between teams, improved contract management and procurement operations, and enhanced our ability to provide affordable and remarkable care to our patients.”
