WINSTON-SALEM, NC – Novant Health today announced that it has received straight A’s in the Leapfrog Group’s Fall 2021 Hospital Safety Grade scoring period. This makes Novant Health the largest healthcare system in North Carolina to ever achieve the highest mark for safety and quality across all of its hospitals. The Leapfrog Group is a national nonprofit that evaluates the safety, quality and patient experience provided by hospitals across the country.

The Leapfrog Group has recognized Novant Health’s longstanding commitment to safety and quality by assigning A’s to 11 of its hospitals:
- New Hanover Regional Medical Center
- Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center
- Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center
- Novant Health Huntersville Medical Center
- Novant Health Kernersville Medical Center
- Novant Health Matthews Medical Center
- Novant Health Medical Park Hospital
- Novant Health Mint Hill Medical Center
- Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center
- Novant Health Rowan Medical Center
- Novant Health Thomasville Medical Center
Letter grades from A to F are assigned to U.S. hospitals based on their ability to prevent errors, injuries, accidents and infections, and improve patient satisfaction.
The health system expanded on its commitment to safety and quality in 2019 by establishing the Novant Health Institute for Safety & Quality, which focuses on patient outcomes and safety, clinical excellence and infection prevention. Recent initiatives that have led to continued improvement in safety and quality include:
- An investment in electronic hand hygiene monitoring systems, which positioned all Novant Health facilities to meet or maintain The Leapfrog Group’s updated hand hygiene standards.
- Focused education for clinical front-line staff on patient safety indicators, reducing complications after surgery.
- An expanded partnership between physicians, nursing teams and pharmacy teams to ensure accurate medication lists and safe medication administration.
